A Madrigal Dinner is a Medieval/Renaissance dinner theater, typically performed at Christmas. Songbirdy Publications is committed to publishing Christ-centered scripts for all ages to enjoy.
At Songbirdy Publications, our mission is to provide faith-based stories in unique platforms. Christmas is the perfect time to share the love of Christ and the message of salvation. Using storytelling to share the gospel is our passion and priority.
In a typical Madrigal dinner, you have The Court made up of the King, Queen, Lords, Ladies, and Jester. In between scenes you have the option of serving different courses of a meal and having musicians entertain the guests. A Madrigal Cast ranges from 20-25 players, and it is recommended to have your ensemble serving during the meal. Along with purchasing the scripts and the rights to perform these shows, we will also include details on planning and budgeting (if requested) for your very own Madrigal Dinners!

At a Medieval court, a young Prince Henrik proudly welcomes Lords and Ladies from across the land to dine at his father’s table, eat their food, and marvel at his crown. The lovely Princess Adelaide is in attendance, but his attempts to woo her are met with disapproval of his arrogant behavior. His arrogance befalls him when he discovers that his lavish lifestyle has left his kingdom bankrupt, and he must tell his father, the King. Trying to save face, the Prince looks for opportunities to redeem himself by his own means without telling his father. Meanwhile, the King and Queen call for the Master of Stories to entertain their guests.
The Master of Stories tells of a young woman receiving an enormous blessing from God: to give birth to the Savior of the world! She and her betrothed must travel miles through dangerous terrain to Bethlehem, where she gives birth to the Holy infant, Jesus.
That a woman of humble birth would disdain to give birth in a stable is no surprise to Henrik, but the story of the baby moves the Prince to look beyond his attempts to redeem himself. The Master of Stories calls this child, “The King of Kings” and the “Lord of Lords”, but how could He be if He was born in a stable?
Our tale takes an exciting turn with the appearance of the Nativity Reenactors and King’s Procession. Join us as the Madrigals sing of the Humble King!
The Jester is a proud fool who thinks highly of herself and her entertainment ability. Our show begins with The Herald announcing that Villagers and the one they call The Rebel have gathered outside, demanding an audience with the King. The Jester mocks their poverty, and the King and Queen reprimand her for her behavior. However, when the Jester claims that the townsfolk are only here to take the King’s crown and money, the King believes her and dismisses the Villagers.
The Jester is suddenly visited by the Spirit of Christmas, who warns her of her pride and misdeeds. The Spirit tells her that three visitors will come to see her to help her change her ways and save the kingdom. She ignores the Spirit and claims she will be unyielding. The Jester is visited by the Spirit of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, each showing her where her actions have led. Join us as we discover the Jester’s journey of redemption and the hope we have in Christ.
The Jester is issued a challenge to write the greatest story ever told. He alters the Nativity story and is warned by Captain Carter that his lies will catch up with him. When bandits attack the palace, the Jester makes claims that entangle him with the future of the nation, tearing Princess Evangeline away from the man she truly loves.
When truth and honor are questioned, how will the Jester answer for his lies? Find out what happens when "...one doesn't know the truth, you will believe anything."
